What Wedges Should You Have in Your Bag? Why Loft Gapping Matters More Than You Think

Most golfers can tell you exactly how far they hit their driver. Ask them how far they hit their 7-iron and you'll probably get an answer within a few seconds. But ask them how far they hit their 52-degree wedge, 56-degree wedge or 60-degree wedge, and the answer often becomes much less certain. That is surprising because the wedges are some of the most important scoring clubs in the bag.
They are the clubs you use when precision matters most, yet many golfers choose them based on tradition, appearance or what came with the set rather than on the actual distances and shots they need to hit. The result can be large gaps between clubs, overlapping distances and a surprising number of awkward half-swings.

Wedge fitting has become considerably more sophisticated in 2026. Manufacturers are now offering an extraordinary range of loft, bounce and grind combinations, while fitting systems increasingly consider the golfer's swing, turf interaction and distance gaps rather than simply recommending a 56-degree sand wedge. PING's current s259 wedge family, for example, offers 25 loft and grind combinations, while its WebFit Wedge system uses information about the golfer and playing conditions to recommend loft and grind options. Titleist's current SM11 fitting process similarly evaluates loft, bounce, grind, strike location, launch, spin and distance gaps.
Your Wedge Setup Starts With Your Pitching Wedge
One of the biggest mistakes golfers make is choosing their wedges independently of their iron set. They might buy a new set of irons, discover that the pitching wedge is 43 or 44 degrees, and then continue using the same 56- and 60-degree wedges they have always carried. Suddenly there is a huge gap between the pitching wedge and sand wedge. The golfer hasn't necessarily done anything wrong, but the equipment configuration has created a distance problem.
This has become more common because modern irons have progressively stronger lofts. A pitching wedge that was traditionally around 47 or 48 degrees can now be considerably stronger in some game-improvement and players-distance iron sets. PING's current iron specifications illustrate the range, with some models offering pitching wedges around 45 degrees and others using stronger loft configurations, while certain models provide alternative loft specifications specifically to manage trajectory and distance gaps.
That means you shouldn't decide that you need a 50, 54 and 58-degree wedge simply because that is a popular configuration. The correct setup depends on the loft of your pitching wedge and, more importantly, the actual distance you hit each club. Your wedges should work as a system.
What Is Loft Gapping?
Loft gapping is simply the process of creating useful distance intervals between your scoring clubs. The objective is to make sure you have a club for the different yardages you regularly encounter rather than having two clubs that go almost the same distance and then a huge gap to the next one. Traditional guidance often suggests gaps of roughly four to five degrees between wedges, but that is only a starting point. The actual distance gap can vary considerably depending on the golfer, club design and swing.
For example, imagine your pitching wedge carries 135 yards, your next wedge carries 112 yards and your sand wedge carries 90 yards. You have a 23-yard gap followed by a 22-yard gap, which may leave you repeatedly facing shots between your pitching wedge and next wedge. You could solve those situations by learning different partial swings, but many golfers would benefit from adding a club that creates a more useful distance progression.
The goal isn't to have perfectly equal loft intervals. It is to have useful distance intervals. A four-degree difference between two wedges doesn't guarantee a four-degree difference in performance, and two wedges with similar lofts can produce different launch and spin characteristics. This is why modern wedge fitting focuses on actual performance rather than simply building a mathematically symmetrical set.
How Many Wedges Do You Really Need?
There isn't one correct number of wedges for every golfer. A player carrying a very strong-lofted pitching wedge may benefit from three specialty wedges, while another golfer could have perfectly sensible yardage coverage with two. The decision should be based on what you need at the bottom of your bag and how effectively you can cover those distances.
Golf Digest's general guidance has long emphasized the importance of filling the gap between a strong pitching wedge and sand wedge, particularly when the pitching wedge is around 45 degrees or stronger. That remains a useful principle, but the modern golfer has far more options than simply adding a traditional 50-degree gap wedge. Current wedge families can be configured in two-degree increments across much of the scoring range, allowing golfers to build much more precise setups. PING's current s259, for example, extends from 46 through 62 degrees across different grind combinations.
There is also an important strategic consideration. The more wedges you carry, the more specialized your short-game options become, but the fewer long-club options you have available at the other end of the bag. If you add another wedge, something else has to come out. That might mean eliminating a rarely used 4-iron, replacing a long iron with a hybrid or changing the composition of your fairway woods. Your wedge setup is therefore part of your entire bag configuration, not an isolated decision.
The 60-Degree Wedge Isn't for Everyone
The 60-degree wedge has developed almost mythical status among golfers. It looks like a serious piece of equipment, and seeing professionals hit spectacular flop shots with one makes it tempting to assume every golfer needs one. But a 60-degree wedge can be difficult to use effectively, particularly for golfers who don't consistently strike the ball or control the clubface around the green.
The right loft depends on the shots you actually need to play. A golfer who frequently plays courses with firm conditions and needs to hit high, soft shots may benefit from a higher-lofted wedge. Another golfer playing softer conditions may find that a lower-lofted wedge with appropriate bounce gives them more predictable contact. A golfer who prefers to keep the ball low and run it toward the hole may not need a high-lofted wedge at all.
This is where fitting becomes much more interesting than simply choosing the highest loft available. The question isn't "Can I hit a 60-degree wedge?" It is "Does a 60-degree wedge help me score better?" Those are very different questions.
Bounce Could Be More Important Than Loft
Loft gets most of the attention when golfers buy wedges, but bounce can be just as important. Bounce refers broadly to the part of the sole that helps the club interact with the turf rather than digging excessively into it. The right amount depends on how you deliver the club, the conditions you typically play in and the type of shots you want to hit.
A golfer with a steeper attack and more aggressive interaction with the turf may benefit from more bounce. A golfer with a shallower delivery or who frequently plays from firm conditions may prefer a different configuration. The important point is that bounce isn't simply a matter of choosing "more" or "less." It interacts with the sole shape and grind of the wedge.

Your Wedges Should Match Your Swing
Here's another reason generic wedge recommendations don't work particularly well. The same wedge can behave very differently in the hands of two golfers. One golfer might deliver the club steeply and take a significant amount of turf, while another barely disturbs the grass. One might routinely open the clubface around the green, while another almost always plays shots with a square face.
Those golfers may need different sole designs even if they have identical handicap indexes and hit their wedges the same distance. The way you interact with the turf is a major part of determining whether a particular grind makes sense. That is why current fitting systems increasingly ask questions about swing and playing conditions rather than simply recommending a loft based on handicap.
The concept is consistent with everything we've discussed throughout this series. Equipment should be fitted to the golfer, not the other way around. Your handicap can provide useful context, but it doesn't tell us how you deliver a wedge into the turf.
The Goal Is Fewer Awkward Shots
One of the easiest ways to understand good wedge gapping is to think about the shots you don't want to hit. If you repeatedly find yourself 118 yards from the green and have to decide between a full pitching wedge and a three-quarter gap wedge, that's a sign your equipment may not be optimized. The same applies when you have 96 yards and your sand wedge goes 85 while your gap wedge goes 105. You are constantly asking yourself to manufacture a shot rather than simply selecting the appropriate club.
Good wedge gapping doesn't eliminate partial shots. In fact, good players deliberately practice and use them. But there is a difference between choosing to hit a three-quarter shot because it is the best tactical option and being forced to hit one because your equipment leaves a 20-yard hole in your yardage chart.
The ultimate goal is confidence. When you know that your wedges cover the distances you regularly face, you can stand over the ball with a clear plan. That reduces decision-making, improves consistency and gives you more opportunities to attack pins rather than simply trying to avoid mistakes.

Someone else might need only a 52 and 58. The answer depends on the rest of your bag and, most importantly, the shots you actually need to hit.
