Most golfers spend an enormous amount of time deciding which driver to buy, which irons to play and which shaft will give them more distance. That is a strange approach when you consider that the golf ball is the only piece of equipment you use on virtually every shot. Your driver might be in your hands 14 times during a typical round, but your golf ball is involved in every drive, iron shot, chip, pitch, bunker shot and putt. So why do so many golfers carefully fit their clubs but completely ignore fitting their golf ball?

The answer is partly because golf balls appear much simpler than clubs. A driver has dozens of specifications that can be adjusted and tested, while a golf ball looks like a golf ball. But underneath that familiar white cover are different cores, layers, compression characteristics, covers and dimple patterns, all designed to influence how the ball behaves. The differences aren't simply about whether a ball is "soft" or "hard." They can affect launch, spin, distance, trajectory, greenside control and feel. The biggest mistake is assuming that the most popular golf ball is automatically the best golf ball for you. Walk onto almost any golf course and you'll see plenty of premium tour balls, including models used by professional players. There is nothing wrong with playing a tour ball if it fits your game, but the fact that a professional golfer uses it tells you very little about whether it is the right choice for your swing. Tour professionals have extraordinary clubhead speeds, highly consistent strike patterns and very specific requirements for launch and spin. Your requirements may be completely different.
The same problem occurs when golfers choose a ball based entirely on price. Buying inexpensive balls can make perfect sense for someone who loses several balls every round, but price should not be the only consideration. Feel is one of the most personal aspects of golf ball selection. Some golfers prefer a very soft sensation off the putter, while others prefer a firmer response. Some like the way a particular ball feels when they hit a wedge, while another golfer may find the same ball too soft or too firm.
Feel absolutely matters, but it should be considered alongside performance rather than instead of performance. If two balls produce virtually identical results for your game, choosing the one that feels better is an easy decision. But if your favorite-feeling ball produces significantly worse launch, spin or dispersion, you need to decide how much that feel is worth to you. Trying every ball on the market isn't realistic for most golfers. The challenge is narrowing that enormous selection down to the few balls that are most likely to work for you.
