Why Your Swing Speed Doesn't Tell the Whole Story

Few words in golf equipment create as much confusion as "regular," "stiff" and "extra stiff." Golfers are constantly told that their swing speed determines which flex they should use, and the advice sounds simple enough. Swing 85 mph and you need regular, swing 100 mph and you need stiff, swing 110 mph and you need extra stiff. But golf equipment isn't nearly that simple, and choosing a shaft based on swing speed alone can leave you with a club that doesn't perform the way you expected.

The three-yard difference in carry may be irrelevant compared with the improvement in accuracy.

Distance matters. But predictable distance matters more.

One of the most useful pieces of information in a fitting is the golfer's typical miss.

Do you miss left?

Do you miss right?

Do you tend to hit low?

Do you produce too much spin?

Do you launch the ball too high?

Do you strike the heel or toe?

These patterns help create a picture of how you interact with the club. A shaft isn't going to magically eliminate a swing flaw, but equipment can potentially be selected to complement your tendencies rather than making them more difficult to manage.

The objective isn't to disguise your swing.

It's to create an equipment setup that gives your swing the best opportunity to perform.
