You hit your 7-iron 155 yards. Then you pull your 6-iron expecting another 10 to 15 yards and watch the ball fly almost exactly the same distance. So you try harder with the 6-iron, catch the next one poorly and end up even shorter. There is another possibility.
Your iron set may simply not be giving you the distance gaps you think it is. Golfers often assume that every iron should automatically produce a predictable distance progression, but the number stamped on the sole doesn't guarantee that. Loft, strike quality, launch, spin, shaft characteristics, clubhead design and your delivery all influence how far each club actually carries.
If two clubs in your bag are producing essentially the same distance, the answer isn't necessarily to swing harder.
You may have an equipment problem rather than a distance problem.
Your Irons Should Have a Job
Every club in your bag should give you access to a different shot.
If your 7-iron carries 155 yards and your 6-iron carries 157, there isn't much practical reason to choose the 6-iron. You're carrying an extra club that isn't giving you another meaningful distance option.
That doesn't necessarily mean the 6-iron is bad.
It means something about the relationship between the two clubs isn't working for you.
Your iron set should create useful gaps from one club to the next so that when you stand over a 165-yard approach, you have a club designed to cover that distance.
Loft Creates the Basic Gap
The simplest explanation for iron distance gaps is loft.
Generally speaking, less loft produces a longer flight when other variables are comparable. That's why a 6-iron normally travels farther than a 7-iron, and a 7-iron normally travels farther than an 8-iron.
But modern irons complicate that picture.
Different manufacturers use different loft structures, and modern game-improvement and players-distance irons can have significantly stronger lofts than traditional irons. Two clubs carrying the same number can therefore have very different lofts and performance characteristics.
The number on the sole tells you what the manufacturer calls the club.
It doesn't tell you how far you will hit it.
Stronger Loft Doesn't Automatically Mean Better
Stronger lofts have become a major part of modern iron design.
A manufacturer can reduce the loft of an iron and produce more distance. Modern head construction can then be used to help maintain launch and forgiveness despite the stronger loft.
That can be beneficial.
But stronger lofts can also change the relationship between clubs.
If your 7-iron is very strong and your 6-iron is also very strong, you may have less usable separation between them than you expect. The problem becomes particularly obvious when your swing doesn't generate enough speed or launch to take advantage of the lower loft.
That's why looking only at the loft number doesn't tell the whole story.
Ball Speed Isn't the Same as Distance
This is another important distinction.
You can generate plenty of ball speed and still fail to get the distance you expect if the launch conditions aren't appropriate. Conversely, a golfer with less speed can sometimes produce surprisingly efficient carry because their launch and spin are better matched to their swing.
With irons, the objective isn't simply to maximize ball speed.
You need an appropriate combination of speed, launch, spin and descent.
That's what turns speed into useful carry distance.
Your 6-Iron May Be Too Difficult to Launch
This is one of the most common reasons golfers see their longer irons bunch together.
As loft decreases, the club becomes more difficult to launch. If you don't generate enough speed or deliver the club in a way that produces sufficient launch, your 6-iron may fly too low.
You can then lose carry despite swinging harder.
The golfer sees the result and thinks, "I need more speed."
But the better question may be:
"Why isn't the speed I'm already producing turning into useful carry?"
That can lead to a very different equipment solution.
Spin Matters More Than Most Golfers Think
Spin is another major component of iron performance.
A shot that launches too low and doesn't generate enough spin can produce a very different trajectory from a shot with a higher launch and appropriate spin. The first may come out flat and struggle to hold a green, while the second can fly higher and descend more steeply.
This matters when you're comparing irons.
A club that goes five yards farther on a range monitor isn't necessarily better if it produces an unreliable trajectory or insufficient stopping power.
The goal isn't simply to make your 6-iron go farther.
It's to make it perform the job your 6-iron is supposed to perform.
Strike Location Can Destroy Your Gaps
You also need to look at where you're striking the face.
If you consistently strike your 6-iron lower or less centrally than your 7-iron, you may not be comparing the clubs fairly. The 7-iron could be benefiting from better contact while the 6-iron is losing ball speed and launch because it is simply harder for you to strike.
This is extremely common.
Golfers often assume that because they can hit a 7-iron well, they should automatically be able to hit a 6-iron just as well.
That's not necessarily true.
The longer club places different demands on your swing.
Your Shaft Can Influence the Result
The shaft is another variable worth considering.
Weight, flex, profile and length can all influence how you deliver an iron. If your longer irons are becoming increasingly difficult to control, the shaft configuration may be contributing to the problem.
That doesn't mean you need a softer shaft.
It doesn't mean you need a lighter shaft.
And it doesn't mean you need graphite.
The right answer depends on how your individual swing interacts with the equipment.

Your 5-Iron Might Be Telling You Something
If your 7-iron and 6-iron are close together, look at your 5-iron.
If your 5-iron is only marginally longer than your 6-iron, you've probably identified a pattern.
At some point, the longer clubs are no longer giving you enough additional carry to justify their place in the set.
That's when golfers should start considering alternatives.
A hybrid.

A different iron configuration.
Or even fewer long irons.
The answer isn't always another traditional iron.
You Don't Need Perfect Ten-Yard Gaps
There is also a misconception that every iron needs to be exactly 10 yards apart.
Real golfers don't work like that.
Your actual gaps depend on your swing speed, strike, lofts, launch conditions and the construction of your clubs. Some golfers might have 8-yard gaps. Others might have 12 or 15.
The important thing is that the gaps are useful and predictable.
If you know your 8-iron carries 140, your 7-iron 152 and your 6-iron 165, you can work with that.
If those numbers randomly become 140, 152 and 153, you've got a problem.
Carry Is More Important Than Total Distance
When evaluating your iron gaps, pay attention to carry.
Total distance can be misleading because it includes the roll after the ball lands. A low-launching shot might roll considerably farther than a properly launched iron.
That can make your numbers look better than they really are.
For approach shots, you need to know how far the ball is going to travel through the air.
If your 6-iron carries 160 and your 7-iron carries 150, that's useful.
If both carry 150 but the 6-iron occasionally rolls another 10 yards, you haven't actually gained a meaningful club.
Look at Your Average, Not Your Best
This is where golfers frequently fool themselves.
You hit one perfect 6-iron 175 yards and immediately decide that your 6-iron is a 175-yard club.
Then you hit five more.
They carry 158, 161, 163, 165 and 159.
Your actual club isn't a 175-yard club.
It's a club that occasionally produces a 175-yard shot.
That distinction matters enormously when you're choosing clubs on the course.
The number you need is your reliable carry, not your personal record.
Dispersion Is Part of the Gap
Distance isn't the only measurement.
Suppose your 6-iron carries 165 yards on average but has a very wide left-to-right dispersion. Your 7-iron carries 155 but produces a much tighter grouping.
If you need to hit a 160-yard green, the 6-iron might technically be closer to the required distance.
But if you can't control it, it may not be the better club.
This is why good equipment fitting looks at multiple performance variables.
Distance without consistency isn't necessarily useful.
Your Set May Need to Be Mixed
This is one of the biggest changes happening in modern iron fitting.
Golfers no longer have to buy an identical set from 4-iron through pitching wedge.
You can combine different types of clubs.
A more forgiving long iron can transition into a more compact mid-iron. A hybrid can replace the 4-iron. A utility iron can replace the 5-iron. The scoring irons can then be selected for control rather than simply matching the long irons.
The result can be a much more functional set.
Your clubs don't need to match perfectly.
They need to work together.
What If Your 6-Iron Is Fine?
It's also possible that nothing is wrong with your equipment.
Maybe the 6-iron and 7-iron are close because you're simply not striking the 6-iron consistently enough yet.
That's useful information too.
A fitting process shouldn't automatically conclude that you need new equipment every time there is a performance issue.
Sometimes the answer is practice.
Sometimes it's technique.
Sometimes it's equipment.
And sometimes it's a combination of all three.
The objective is to identify which one is actually responsible.
This Is Why Generic Iron Recommendations Fall Short
Search for "best irons for a 15 handicap" and you'll find plenty of recommendations.
But handicap doesn't tell you everything.
Two golfers with the same handicap can have completely different swing speeds, physical characteristics, strike patterns and weaknesses. One might need more launch and forgiveness. Another might need more control. One might struggle with long irons while another hits them extremely well.
They shouldn't necessarily be playing the same set.
The same principle applies to loft and shaft selection.
There is no universal iron configuration.

The objective isn't to make every club go as far as possible.

If your 6-iron needs to carry 165 yards, build a setup that gives you a reliable 165-yard option. If your 5-iron isn't giving you a meaningful advantage over your 6-iron, question whether you need it. If a hybrid produces the distance and consistency you need, use the hybrid.
There is nothing sacred about the number stamped on the sole.
There is nothing impressive about carrying a club you don't trust.
And there is no reason your equipment should create unnecessary decisions.
Your irons should give you predictable options, not predictable frustration.
If two clubs in your bag are doing the same job, it's worth asking why.
Because the goal of equipment fitting isn't to fill your bag.
It's to make every club in it earn its place.
